The Institute of Majai

The Institute of Majai where all those with a desire and/or talent for magic go to hone their skills. As magic itself is a force that allows one to bend the nature to their will, the institute serves as both a place of learning as a place of safe harbor for Majai or magic users. The institute itself is separated into groups that a magic user is assigned after passing the test of entrance; The White Robes, the Grey Robes, and the Black Robes. Each group has its own morality and focuses on encourages its students to follow a certain guideline, and failure to follow the doctrine set by the Robes can result in robe color change or expulsion from the institute altogether. Each Robe is lead by a single individual that stands almost as a paragon to what the robes represent and are typically elected by their peers. These three individuals then decide the course of the institute and collectively decide on the judgments of all who live within.

The Institute of Majai itself comprises of several towers scattered throughout Aarde, each tower being dedicated to a certain Robe. Only the main location of the institute to which all must first venture to upon joining the Institute houses four towers in one compound; in addition to this, the compound is also the only institute that has no set location. The main institute actually appears to those who possess a desire to join and possess the aptitude to do so, transporting the individual unknowingly. This can occur via dreams, passing through a random doorway, or simply taking a walk and appearing outside the compound in the blink of an eye. All towers away from the compound, however, have set locations and cannot be entered unless one meets the qualifications; all towers have their own set qualifications whether it be one belonging to a certain Robe or through invitation.

In regards to the Robes, as previously stated, each group has its own doctrines and depending on a individuals choices in life and during the test they will be relegated to a specific robe group. The White Robes are considered the more compassionate of the robes, often showing more desire to preserve life and bring about peace for all. The members of this order are most notable for their desires to follow the path of knowledge, wisdom, and protection magic. They are closely aligned with the good morality, serving as forces against the darkness. Those that possess these robes are often welcomed in any place they go from small villages to large cities, viewed as healers and revered for their morality.

The next Robes are those of the Gray, who serve as the balance of good and evil; some would even refer to them as the more practical of the three robes. They are notable for being the sort that prefer to go with the best options regardless of the outcome being having positive or negative ramifications. So long as balance is preserved, they make the necessary decision based solely upon it. Members of these robes follow the path of illusions and knowledge for knowledge sake; rather than seeking it out for some ill or positive means. These members are thusly believed to be more acutely attuned with magic and have little qualms using any kind of magic so long as it serves a means to an end.

The last of the Robes is the Black, who are evil aligned but do not cause random destruction for destruction sake (like killing at random with no true means to the kill or destroying villages just for the sake of doing it). Such things actually has negative ramifications on magic as a whole, as magic is affected by life and death; such actions can actually result in one being removed from the Institute as whole and be marked as a rogue magic user. Black robes may be cruel in their pursuits of power, but more notably they are cunning. Most will actively shy away from open acts of violence and instead pursue a more subtle method to achieve a goal, if such means is available. They seek the easiest and fastest route tower, even if it is unethical and results in negative results for all others around them. If it means that it will satisfy their hunger for power, very little can stand in the way of their desires.

While there is only three robes belonging to the Institute of Majai, there is a final group of magic users that exist that hold no allegiance to the Institute and serve only themselves. These magic users called rogues or Red Robes, and are either criminals hunted by the institute or simply magic users who have gone overlooked by the Institute of Majai. Their alignments can vary depending on their decisions in life and are limited to the knowledge of magic that they learn on their own through their travels, whether taught by other magic users or learned from lost tomes.
